Youth as Producers on the Internet

As digital pedagogies are becoming more and more prevalent in 21stC classrooms, our youth have greater opportunities to collaborate on, produce and present their work and ideas about learning and what they have learnt through their “formal” education to the world beyond the boundaries of their physical learning environments... into that of the online world. The Production blog postings of Intric8! will highlight some of the ways the Internet has enabled youth the opportunity to produce and share ideas, stories, resources and artefacts with a global audience.

An exploration of the intricacies of youth engagement with the Internet

We are a group of Master of Education students studying “Youth, Popular Culture and Text” at QUT, Brisbane, Australia. Our task is to explore young people’s relationship with the media form “The Internet”.

To ensure a thorough critical focus of such a broad and complex media form, we have chosen to use the Circuit of Culture (du Gay, Hall, Janes, Mackay & Negus, 1997), as a framework for our investigations.

This model considers the interrelationships between the elements as well as the elements themselves, for example: Consumption (audience) and Representation; Regulation and Production; Representation and Regulation; Identity and Representation; Production and Consumption; Identity and Production. About Us!

Our group consists of five Master of Education Students (Teacher Librarianship) studying Youth, Popular Culture and Text:

Kerrie Thompson works full time as a Primary Science Facilitator in North Queensland. Although currently not working in a library context the skills and knowledge gained since beginning the Master of Education (Teacher-Librarianship) course, has been utilised in her current role through using digital media in teaching Science. Using digital media in all subject areas is a powerful tool in developing students’ knowledge to become informed digital citizens.

Liana Trpkoski is a former Legal Studies and English Teacher. She has decided to make a big change in her career and head for the library. Liana is throughly enjoying learning about new technologies and developments in the teacher librarian field and can't wait to put them into practice in her own library.

Bronwyn White works full-time as the eLearning/Resource Manager at BayView State School in Thornlands, in Brisbane's Bayside (opened 2010). She is responsible for establishing the school's Discovery Centre (library) and the school computer network. In addition to managing both the library and all things IT, she mentors teachers and collaborates with them to ensure that digital pedagogies are embedded across the year levels and curriculum areas at BayView

Carmel Wooding is currently on maternity leave from her role as 'iCentre teacher' at a P-12 College on the Gold Coast. Carmel is passionate about youth & technology & is thoroughly enjoying her experiences studying her Master of Education.

Paula Vanni, after many years, is doing her final unit of the Master of Education degree. Not a teacher, however, but still harboring the dream which began this study direction of working with children in schools in some exciting way! Confessing to a career in social work alongside some experience and much passion about working with children.
